About Me

I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us — don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
                                  —Emily Dickinson

  • America: The Great Mix Tape

In my 4th grade civics class the big controversy was that America was not actually a melting pot. “Think of it more like a mixed salad,” my teacher said. “Every part maintains its own individuality, but contributes to the collective dish.”

I prefer the metaphor of a mix tape. Since I get sentimental around election season, the way that some people get sentimental around Christmas, I made a mix tape for you, my fellow Americans, of the songs I think most describe who we are: the glory of our electoral process, the eternal fight for our pleasures, the tragedies of injustice, and the rocking hard work of civic collective action.
